Contemporary Extremism in Greece. New Trends or Old Trend?"

          Abstract

The presentation focuses on the understanding of the phenomenon of extremism in Greece which was very often present after the global economic crisis of 2008. In this period Greece experienced more severe right wing violence per capita than any other country in Western Europe. Presented proposal has the ambition to present extremism in its most salient dimensions i.e violence carried out by the members of the Golden Dawn(women, LGBTIQ community, migrants, political opponents, refugees, human rights activists, journalists), increased far right vigilantism on the island and lastly, as a right wing militancy resulting from the naming dispute with the Republic of Northern Macedonia. The presentation will include also other forms of extremism during COVID 19 and will adopt a longitudinal perspective by relying on the relevant dataset prepared in an annually basis for the European Centre for Democracy Development since 2015.
