“The State of Hate in Canada, 2021”

Abstract:

In this presentation I will speak to the role being played by the Global Consortium On Bigotry

and Hate in mapping the terrain of global and local hate prejudice, with special attention paid

to the case of Canada in 2021. I will provide context on Canada relevant to understanding the

way hate circulates here, and where its impacts are most directly felt. I will conclude by

discussing three recent Canadian examples of violent prejudice the impacts of which are in the

process of shifting the national discussion of racism and hate, and along with it government

policies as well as popular strategies of resistance and critique.
